Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Calls for Further Water Quality Testing at St Albans Correctional Facility

Nelson Mandela Bay:The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has urged for additional testing of water quality at the St Albans Correctional Facility following concerns about the safety of its drinking water.

According to South African Government News Agency, the municipality's routine water quality monitoring records have shown no incidents of compromised water quality at St Albans. However, they caution that this does not conclusively guarantee the safety of water at all consumption points within the facility.

The municipality, located in the Eastern Cape, emphasized the need for careful evaluation of concerns alongside existing monitoring records and any new test results. Despite the facility receiving water from the municipal supply, it is conveyed through a private pipeline managed by the Department of Public Works and stored in facility tanks maintained by Public Works.

This distinction is crucial, as water quality can degrade in private pipelines and storage systems after leaving the municipal network. Therefore, the municipality underscores the importance of distinguishing between the municipal supply water quality and that at the consumption point.

The Department of Public Works is encouraged to collect water samples from the facility's tanks and consumption points for testing at an accredited laboratory. The municipality is willing to provide data from its monitoring program to aid in evaluating the municipal water supply.

The results of these tests will be essential in identifying any water quality issues, their origins, and necessary corrective actions. If health risks are detected, authorities must swiftly implement corrective measures and inform affected individuals as per applicable guidelines.

The municipality is committed to supplying water that meets the South African National Standard for Drinking Water (SANS 241) and addressing concerns responsibly. Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe has called for collaboration among authorities to ensure concerns are thoroughly investigated and interventions are evidence-based, emphasizing the shared responsibility of protecting public health.
