News: 98 Illegal liquor outlets closed down, large quantity of liquor seized and over 300 suspects nabbed during heightened Safer Festive Season operations

POLOKWANE – The intensified Police Safer Festive Season Operations in Limpopo that were in full swing since Wednesday, 18 December 2019 until this morning, targeting the mushrooming of illegal liquor outlets and checking on the licensed outlets for compliance, resulted in the shutting down of ninety eight (98) shebeens, confiscation of large quantities of liquor and the arrest of more than 300 suspects. Twenty nine (29) licensed Liquor premises were charged for non-compliance.

These operations are being conducted across the Province, targeting liquor outlets and crimes generated from these areas. A total number of 380 suspects have so far been arrested for liquor related offenses while others were charged for non-compliance with the Liquor Act.

The Police will continue to conduct inspections on licensed liquor premises to ensure compliance with the Liquor Act.

In the Groblersdal Cluster, Police have on Friday 20 December 2019, closed down two shebeens and confiscated 50 cases of liquor. The owners were charged with operating liquor outlets without a valid license.

All the arrested suspects will soon appear before various magistrate’s courts.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, has commended the members for their hard work and dedication in fighting the scourge of liquor related crimes and has instructed that these operations must be intensified until all illegal shebeens are closed down and all licensed premises operate within the prescribed laws.
