News: Cable thief convicted

DURBAN The theft of cable has been a great concern for the past few years in various areas within the province and police are working tirelessly to combat this crime trend. On 21 January 2020 the Empangeni Regional Court convicted and sentenced Vusi Thokozani Gumede to ten (10) years imprisonment for theft of cable.

On 19 August 2019 at 20:30 an Empangeni resident was at his home watching television when the electricity went off. He then proceeded to the nearby power sub-station to investigate. On his arrival he noticed that the door of the sub-station was open. He was

joined by his neighbour and while conducting an inspection they noticed a bag full of cable on the ground. They also spotted the accused as he attempted to jump over the wall. Both men were able to apprehend the accused and call police.

Following a rigorous investigation the accused was convicted and sentenced for the crime.
