News: Police arrest 289 suspects and seize firearms and large quantity of ammunition

POTCHEFSTROOM – In ensuring that the all people are and feel safe, police in the North West Province, together with other role players, arrested 289 suspects for different offences through Economic Stimulus Package Operation and Operation Fiela II which were conducted over the weekend.

The arrested suspects include 49 for contact and contact related crimes. In addition, 180 were nabbed for crimes dependent on police action for detection such as illegal possession of firearms, driving under the influence of alcohol, drug-related crimes and liquor related contraventions.

As part of the operations and in a period that covers Monday, 12 August 2019 and Monday, 19 August 2019, the police managed to seize 882 round of ammunition, 22 firearms and 11 magazines. The operations also led to seizure of various items such as liquor, drugs, 30 goats, cell phones and electrical appliances. The suspects are expected to appear in various courts within the Province today.

As a result, the Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane expressed her appreciation about the integrated operations that resulted in the successes. She said that these types of operations including those that are critical for investor confidence and economic development will continue to improve public safety and protection.
