Newspaper Review: EU Endorsement of French Initiative, West Bank Detention Raids

The European Union’s endorsement of the French peace initiative and Israeli detentions raids across the West Bank hit the front page headlines in the dailies.

The three dailies reported that the European Union’s foreign ministers endorsed the French initiative to hold an international conference to restart the Palestinian-Israeli peace process.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added the EU is determined to make a significant contribution to the initiative.

Highlighting official Palestinian reaction to the endorsement, the dailies said the Palestinian leadership welcomed the EU’s resolution endorsing the initiative.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added in this regard that the Palestinian leadership called on the US Administration to support the initiative which is, according to the them, the only way conducive to real peace.

It quoted presidential spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh as claiming the initiative is “an important political step and a great achievement for President Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian leadership’s policy.”

Highlighting Israeli detention raids across the West Bank, al-Ayyam said Israeli forces detained 15 Palestinians from the West Bank. Al-Hayat al-Jadida said at least 16 were detained, including two journalists.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said a number of Palestinians suffered excessive teargas inhalation during clashes with Israeli forces in the Jerusalem refugee camp of Shufat and the Bethlehem town of Beit Fajjar.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Palestinians attended the funeral procession of Arif Jaradat, 22, who died Sunday after he succumbed to a live bullet wound he sustained last month as Israeli forces shot him.

Furthermore, quoting statistics published by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS), the three dailies said there are 5.6 million Palestinian refugees around the world who were forcibly displaced as a result of the Nakba.

Finally, referring to a Jerusalem Post report, al-Quds reported Israeli Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz as stating some progress was achieved with regards to the proposal to build an artificial island off the coast of the Gaza Strip.
