Newspaper Review: Killing Palestinian at Nablus District Checkpoint Focus of Dailies

The killing of a Palestinian man by Israeli forces following an alleged stabbing attempt at the Huwwara checkpoint in the northern West Bank district of Nablus hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

The three dailies said a Palestinian man was shot dead by Israeli forces at Huwwara checkpoint. Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida described the killing as assassination.

Al-Ayyam explained the man was “assassinated” after he attempted to stab Israeli soldiers at the checkpoint. Al-Hayat al-Jadida added that in the aftermath of the killing, Israeli forces tightened inspection procedures to the south of Nablus.

Highlighting the situation in flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said Israeli Jewish settlers forced their way into the mosque compound, revered by Jews as the Temple Mount, amidst calls for mass intrusions into the site.

Furthermore, the three dailies reported Israeli Prison Service (IPS) placed Secretary-General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) Ahmad Sadaat in solitary confinement.

They explained Sadaat was placed in solitary confinement after he started a hunger strike in solidarity with hunger-striking Palestinian detainee Bilal Kayid, who entered his 48th day without food.

Al-Quds said Palestinians commemorated the first anniversary of the 2015 Duma arson attack.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu informed US Secretary of State John Kerry he preferred the Egyptian-led initiative to the French bid.

Netanyahu was reported in al-Ayyam as accusing France of supporting organizations that allegedly incite to violence and do not recognize Israel’s right to exist.

The three dailies said fires broke out in the historic Al-Jazzar Mosque in Akka, causing extensive property damage.

Finally, al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Fatah’s Information and Culture Commission slamming Iranian Foreign Minister’s Advisor Hussein Sheikh al-Islam’s remarks as “a reflection of the policy of his destructive system.”

Al-Islam made his remarks following a meeting between President Mahmoud Abbas and President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran Maryam Rajavi in Paris.
