Nigerians Have Spoken the Lessons Will Reverberate Throughout the Continent

The Chairman of the Governing Council of the National Human Rights Commission has indicated that Nigeria’s Democracy is maturing.
According to him “Nigerians from all walks of life went to the polls on Saturday, March 28, 2015 to vote for their leaders. Notwithstanding several hitches and some frustrations, citizens turned out in large numbers and showed tremendous tenacity, patience and tolerance. All through the voting process and across the country, Nigerians exercised their constitutional right to elect their leaders with civic pride.”
The elections are now history. Despite Attempts by Boka Haram insurgents to disrupt the election, the people faced the challenges. How did they do it?
The Independent Electoral Commission was above manipulation. It was able to earn the confidence of the political parties and leaders. It was able to tabulate results from 150,000 polling stations.
The fact that Jonathan has conceded defeat confirms the freeness and fairness of the elections. The independence and professionalism of the security forces was also commended by the National Human Rights Commission
The fact that a country with a population comprising one sixth of the population of the continent could demonstrate to the whole world that it could ensure a peaceful transfer of political power confirms that Africa has a future and sooner rather than later, the will of the people shall prevail in both the north and south of the Sahara. Africa would then be able to guarantee a life of liberty, dignity and prosperity to the African people.
