Pretoria: The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has announced the successful processing of all funding applications in preparation for the 2026 academic year. The scheme confirmed that it met its commitment to process all applications by December 31, 2025, allowing students to check their funding status via the NSFAS Portal.
According to South African Government News Agency, the breakdown of the applications is as follows: NSFAS received 893,847 applications from first-time entering students. Of these, 609,403 applications were approved for financial aid, 49,538 were rejected, and 218,043 applications remained incomplete, pending further documentation. Additionally, 16,863 applications were either withdrawn or cancelled.
NSFAS emphasized the importance of first-time students providing a valid acceptance from a higher learning institution, which is typically available after matric results are released. Incomplete applications require additional documentation, and notifications have been sent to the affected students, highlighting the necessity of submitting a parental consent form and a correctly completed NSFAS Declaration Form within 30 days of notification.
For continuing students, 416,688 have met the academic progression criteria and will continue to receive funding, while 129,264 did not meet these criteria. The total number of continuing students assessed was 545,952, with information specifically pertaining to university students, as TVET results are expected on January 13, 2026.
Both first-time and continuing students who face rejection have the right to appeal the decision. NSFAS has streamlined its appeals process, urging students to initiate appeals promptly and provide complete documentation within a strict 30-day window from the notification date to avoid forfeiting their appeal opportunity.
In addition, NSFAS has addressed many outstanding payments to higher education institutions and accommodation providers. The scheme is committed to resolving any remaining short payments swiftly in collaboration with accommodation providers.
With the matric results release scheduled for January 12, 2025, NSFAS extended best wishes to all matric learners, acknowledging their hard work and perseverance. The agency encouraged students to view this moment as a beginning of new opportunities, regardless of their results. - SAnews.gov.za
