Off-duty Flying Squad member recovers firearms and ammunition: Gqeberha

GQEBERHA – A dedicated and committed off duty police officer heeded to his calling on Monday, 05 April 2021 when he received information of firearms that were going to be transported to Queenstown earlier that day.
At about 00: 10, on 05 April 2021, as the daring Warrant Officer was following up on the information, he noticed a male emerging from a yard in Maseleni Street in New Brighton with two bags in his hand. While waiting for backup, the officer confronted the alleged suspect. The suspect started running with the officer in close pursuit. The fleeing suspect fired shots at the officer and managed to escape through a narrow gap between the houses. While running, the suspect discarded a shotgun and the bags.
The following firearms and ammunition were recovered:
• A pump action shotgun, reportedly stolen in Kabega Park in July 2017
• 303 long rifle – stolen in Algoa Park in December 2019
• Magazine containing five .303 rounds
• An empty R1 rifle magazine
• 62 various calibre rounds of ammunition
Police are investigating a case of attempted murder. An enquiry docket was opened in respect of the recovered firearms and ammunition.
The Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brigadier Thandiswa Kupiso commended the officer for his dedication and commitment in ensuring the safety of his community as well as making sure that illegal firearms are taken off the streets. ‘This officer has gone beyond the call of duty and his actions are a reflection of true service delivery to the communities. This officer knew the risks and dangers associated to his vocation yet he remained committed to the cause of serving and protecting his community. This selfless act is commendable and a warning to criminals that the police are watching their every move at the least expected time,’ added Brig Kupiso.
