One person arrested following robbery, Kwazakele

The role that firearms play in the committing of serious offences, remains the focus of the SAPS in the Motherwell Cluster area. A 24-year-old suspect was arrested last night after an armed robbery took place at 18:45 at Save More Spaza shop in Kovu Street, Kwazakele.

Two armed suspects entered the shop and demanded money, cigarettes and cell phones. The suspects started to shoot at the shop owner who attempted to hide in the shop and in the process a 25-year-old male that was in the shop to buy cigarettes was wounded in his leg. He fled out of the shop and ran down the street.

A short distance away he flagged down a Kwazakele police vehicle. He quickly informed the police members of what happened, and on reaching the shop, the two suspects came running out of the shop. They fired shots at the police members who in turn returned fire on the suspects, but managed to evade arrest by running between the houses. As soon as back up police vehicles arrived, a search for the suspects ensued.

One 24-year-old suspect was then found hiding behind a house in Bucwa Street and after searching him, he was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with 6 rounds of ammunition. He was arrested and charged for the illegal possession of an unlicensed fire arm. Further investigation will be conducted to also link him with the armed robbery and the attempted murder of the wounded 25-year-old male. He will be appearing before the New Brighton Magistrates Court on 26 July 2018.
