Operation Shanela Nets Over 15,000 Suspects in Nationwide Crime Sweep

Pretoria: Operation Shanela, a concerted effort by the South African Police Service (SAPS), has successfully apprehended 15,248 suspects across the nation in a sweeping crime crackdown. According to South African Government News Agency, the arrests were made as part of a broad initiative to combat and prevent crime throughout the country. The operation included a variety of crime-fighting activities such as tracking operations, roadblocks, high visibility patrols, stop and searches, and the tracing of wanted suspects. The police reported that 2,441 wanted individuals were apprehended for serious and violent offenses, including murder, attempted murder, rape, and business and house robberies. Of these, 170 suspects were specifically arrested for murder, with the highest numbers recorded in KwaZulu-Natal (47), Gauteng (34), and the Western Cape (32). In addition, 106 individuals were arrested for attempted murder, and 145 people were charged with rape. The operation also saw the arrest of 233 drug dealers an d 2,234 individuals for drug possession, with the Western Cape accounting for 1,214 of these arrests. Further efforts led to the arrest of 96 suspects for illegal firearm possession, and 1,460 illegal foreign nationals were detained. The crackdown also targeted traffic offenders, resulting in 772 arrests for drunken driving. In terms of recoveries and confiscations over the past week, police seized 115 firearms, 2,394 rounds of ammunition, and recovered 81 hijacked and stolen vehicles. The operation also highlighted significant takedowns, such as the fatal shootout with six armed extortion suspects in the Eastern Cape and the seizure of illicit cigarettes worth R2.8 million in the Northern Cape. In KwaZulu-Natal, drugs valued at over R10 million were recovered, and a foreign national was arrested. Additionally, in the Free State, police rescued a kidnapping victim and apprehended three suspects. In the Western Cape, a 68-year-old man was arrested for unlawful possession of multiple firearms, and in Limpo po, a man was apprehended for the murder of his mother, with her remains discovered in plastic buckets. The SAPS Anti-Kidnapping Task Team also made significant strides, rescuing a 30-year-old man in Germiston and an 82-year-old businessman in Roodepoort, arresting several suspects in the process. The police affirmed their commitment to continuing these operations to uphold the state's authority and ensure the safety and security of all South Africans and visitors.
