PARLIAMENTARY WEEK AHEAD

A dialogue on Parliament’s rules, a meeting with the South African National Editors’ Forum, 29 committee meetings, oversight visits by four committees and induction for National Council of Provinces Members are among issues coming up this week.

Parliament’s Presiding Officers, National Assembly Speaker Ms Baleka Mbete and National Council of Provinces Chairperson Ms Thandi Modise are scheduled tomorrow to lead a dialogue with media and other stakeholders on Parliament’s rules. A similar dialogue was held at Parliament last year. Also scheduled for tomorrow is a closed meeting of the Presiding Officers with the South African National Editors’ Forum.

Induction for National Council of Provinces Members is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Four Portfolio Committees are scheduled to go on oversight visits this week – the Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources to Gauteng, the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education to the Bohlabela and Nkangala Education Districts in Mpumalanga, the Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements to several entities in Gauteng and the Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation to Mpumalanga.

Subcommittee on Review of the National Assembly Rules: Formulation of rules to regulate section 89 of the Constitution: Removal of President (Tuesday)

National Assembly Rules Committee (Thursday)

Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry: Public hearings on Committee Bill dealing with debt intervention (Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday)

Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises: Meeting with Minister of Public Enterprises and leadership of state-owned companies on progress made in addressing governance challenges in state-owned companies (Tuesday); inquiry into corporate governance at Eskom (Tuesday and Wednesday)

Portfolio Committee on Public Works: Stakeholder workshop on inputs to the Expropriation Bill (Tuesday)

Portfolio Committee on Rural Development and Land Reform: Stakeholder engagement on the Communal Property Associations Amendment Bill (Tuesday and Wednesday)

Portfolio Committee on Police: Public hearings on the Critical Infrastructure Protection Amendment Bill (Tuesday); briefing on the Independent Police Investigative Directorate Amendment Bill (Friday)

Joint meeting of the Standing Committees on Appropriations and on Finance and the Portfolio Committee on Public Service Administration/Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation: Challenges facing Steinhoff International (Wednesday)
