Police arrest suspect shortly after finding injured man in Westbury

PARKTOWN – Police have arrested a suspect for attempted murder hours after finding a man who had been shot and injured in Westbury.

Police on Sunday morning, 28 July 2019 between 01:00 and 01:30 heard gunshots and immediately proceeded towards Steytler Street, Westbury, where the shots were coming from. A man was spotted running across Crousis Street and police chased and apprehended the man in Pollack Avenue.

The man had been shot and injured, he was rushed to hospital after police had notified his family. The victim was able to explain the circumstances leading up to the shooting incident and was able to give police the identity of the suspect.

While police were still on sector patrol, police were approached by members of the public who handed them the spent cartridges allegedly collected in the vicinity of the crime scene. More information was obtained from the crime scene leading up to the arrest of a suspect, who was also mentioned by victim that was shot and injured.

Further investigations are underway to find the firearm that was used in the shooting.

The arrested suspect will appear in Sophiatown Magistrate’s Court soon.
