Police close 25 illegal liquor outlets and arrest 51 people for possession of drugs

Intensified Buya Mthetho Operations by the integrated Gauteng Law Enforcement agencies will continue to deal with illegal liquor outlets and drug trafficking as they are the main contributors to violent crimes against women and children, domestic violence and murder. Over the weekend police in Gauteng closed twenty-five (25) liquor outlets, seize 14 handguns and arrested 51 people for possession of drugs. Police are also appealing to the members of the public to come forward and report people who are exposing the youth to liquor and drugs. Crime Stop (08600 10111) may anonymously be contacted for any information.

As the South African Police Service in Gauteng, Metro Police Departments, Gauteng Traffic and other government departments will be engaged in campaigns to challenge gender based violence against women and children, members of the community are urged to take a stand against women and children abuse. Integrated operations by all law enforcement agencies will also be concentrating on more raids of illegal liquor outlets, drug trafficking and tracing of suspects wanted for cases including rape, kidnapping, robbery, assault and malicious damage to property.

Several cases of rape and kidnappings are reported daily and the FCS units (Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit) are working hard to bring the perpetrators to book. The conviction and sentencing of Lebogang Mokoena to 13 life terms and more than 200 years imprisonment for kidnapping, robbery and pointing of a firearm at the South Gauteng High Court sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrate Court, is yet another example that police are hard at work to deal with cases affecting women.
