Police investigate murder of Bloekombos woman killed during Kraaifontein protest as 14 are arrested

CAPE TOWN – The death of a 19-year-old Bloekombos woman is the subject of a police murder investigation after she was shot inside the premises of a trucking business on Saturday afternoon. As the investigation continues, a 62-year-old man was subsequently arrested on Saturday evening for the murder.
The shooting incident followed ongoing protests that are linked to the demolition of structures by the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement officials on a piece of land in Kraaifontein.
It is alleged that on Saturday afternoon at approximately 15:00, a group of about 500 protesters had stormed the business premises on Old Paarl Road after a light delivery vehicle was torched outside the truck depot.
Public Order Police deployed to the area prevented the group from invading the business. Reports indicate as the group forced their way into the premises, an individual (now suspect) fired a gun shot from the premises and the 19-year-old was hit in the head. The group fled and scattered. It is further alleged the deceased collapsed and died.
A 36-year-old man was also hit by rubber bullets in the knee. Thirteen protesters were arrested for public violence. All the arrested suspects will appear in court on Tuesday, 11 August 2020.
Police continue to monitor the situation.
