Police on sentencing of Empangeni rapist

The sentence came after Manzini was accused of raping a 15-year-old mentally challenged woman in Obizo reserve, Empangeni. During the period of October 2014, the victim was at home when the accused came and offered her fruit before raping her. He then threatened the victim not to report the matter to anyone. The accused continued to rape the victim when the elders were not at home up until the victim fell pregnant in November 2014.

The victim’s aunt noticed that the victim was not feeling well, upon questioning her, the victim broke her silence that Manzini used to rape her when there was no one at home and it was discovered that she was also pregnant. Manzini was questioned, he denied the allegation and threaten to kill them. The matter was reported to Empangeni police station and the docket was transferred to Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation. The DNA test was done and linked the accused to the case. He was arrested in November 2014 and charged accordingly. His bail application was denied and was remanded in custody until he was sentenced.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa expressed his gratitude towards Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences and for gathering all the evidence that led to the conviction of the accused.
