Police open an Inquest Docket after drowning incident

ALIWAL NORTH – Members of Aliwal North Detective Unit have opened an Inquest docket after a girl drowned at Orange River on Friday 18 October. The incident reportedly happened after a group of grade 12 learners from Aliwal North High school went to the river to have party before final exams began.

The group of children went swimming in the river and unfortunately, 19-year-old Lulama Nkomana experienced difficulty and drowned. Other learners tried to rescue her and called an Ambulance from Aliwal Hospital. She was certified dead by EMS. The group was debriefed by the school Principal, Mr Van Aswegen who ensured further counselling will be arranged before their final exams commenced.

The Aliwal North Station Commander, Colonel Chris Wright sent a message of condolences to Nkomana family members while also urging community members to practise safety when swimming in rivers.
