Police prompt reaction leads to arrest of alleged rapist

POLOKWANE – The 32-year-old man believed to be a bogus prophet suspected of rape was on Sunday morning, 09 February 2019 at about 10:00, nabbed following a prompt reaction by members of the SAPS Burgersfort Cluster Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.

The arrest follows an incident that occurred earlier this month on the 04 February 2020, where a 26-year-old woman from Prakteseer was raped by a self-proclaimed prophet at her place of residence at about 11:00.

It is alleged that the victim received a call from this man who is known to her, after he claimed that he wants to perform some rituals on her. The suspect directed the victim to buy various items. Upon mixing the concoction, he ordered the victim to drink and few a minutes later, she felt dizzy. The suspect then raped the victim several times and after the ordeal, he fled the scene on foot.

The case was reported to the police and a case of rape was opened. The manhunt and investigations ensued until the suspect was cornered and arrested at his home in Mashifane Park outside Burgersfort.

The suspect will appear before the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court tomorrow on Monday, 10 February 2020 facing a charge of rape.

The police investigations are still continuing.
