Pongola vigilantes sent to jail for life

DURBAN – “We always emphasize to the community that taking the law into their own hands is punishable and that all criminal activities must be reported to the police. Vigilantism cannot be tolerated,” said the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula.
On 10 September 2020, the Pongola Regional Court convicted and sentenced Sibusiso Mabhoyana Nkosi, 39, and Simo Siphelele Sibiya, 24 to life imprisonment for killing Sibusiso Mdluli, 24, in February 2019. The accused assaulted and set Mdluli alight on 17 February 2019. Mdluli was found with burn injuries at Ncotshane Reserve. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. A case of murder was opened at Pongola police station for investigation.
The accused were arrested few days after the incident. They were taken to court for trial until the successful prosecution where they were both sentenced to life imprisonment for murder. During the trial it was revealed that the accused killed Mdluli, accusing him of raping a girlfriend of one of the accused.
