Post Office armed robbery suspect to appear in court

KWAZULU-NATAL – A 39-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Amanzimtoti Magistrate’s Court on Thursday following his arrest for an armed robbery which happened at the Amanzimtoti post office yesterday.
It is alleged that on Tuesday, 26 January 2021 armed suspects entered the Amanzimtoti post office and reportedly used an axe to smash the counter glass to gain access to cash. The suspects then took just over R 100 000 in cash before they fled the scene in their getaway vehicle.
Information was received that the suspects fled the scene in a black Navara towards Umbumbulu. A joint operation comprising of the K9 Unit, ET Rapid Response and Hawks members from the Durban Serious Organised Crime unit was swiftly conducted.
The suspects’ vehicle was spotted in Umbumbulu area by ET Rapid Response members and the suspects allegedly fired shots towards the security guards who retaliated resulting in one suspect being fatally wounded. An undisclosed amount of cash and an axe were recovered at the scene.
The arrested suspect is expected to appear in the Amanzimtoti Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 28 January 2021.
