Johannesburg: President Cyril Ramaphosa has noted the decision by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to charge National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, as well as his upcoming court appearance on 21 April 2026. President Ramaphosa had also taken note of the arrest of 12 senior police officers in connection with a procurement-related matter. According to South African Government News Agency, President Ramaphosa will be addressing the matter concerning General Masemola in accordance with the law. The President, working together with the Minister of Police, is committed to ensuring that the South African Police Service (SAPS) remains stable and able to continue fulfilling its policing mandate, as stated in a statement from the Presidency. The SAPS spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, confirmed that the summons relates to the Medicare 24 procurement tender. Masemola was appointed as National Commissioner of the SAPS in 2022, with the task of strengthening crime-fighting efforts and restoring public confiden ce in policing. The latest developments come amid ongoing concerns about corruption and maladministration in parts of the police service, particularly in relation to procurement processes. The government has in recent years prioritized reforms aimed at improving accountability within law enforcement agencies, including strengthening oversight mechanisms and tackling corruption linked to state capture.
