President Ramaphosa to Inaugurate New Pharmaceutical Facility in Pretoria

Pretoria:President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to inaugurate the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research's (CSIR) FuturePharma facility in Pretoria on Wednesday.

According to South African Government News Agency, this launch represents a significant step in enhancing South Africa's pharmaceutical innovation ecosystem and boosting the country's capacity to develop and manufacture essential medicines and pharmaceutical products.

FuturePharma is an open-access facility designed to aid in the development and production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and other pharmaceutical technologies. It aims to enhance the nation's pharmaceutical value chain by bridging the gap between laboratory research and the commercialisation of pharmaceutical technologies. The facility will provide researchers and industry partners with specialized infrastructure and expertise to advance these technologies towards manufacturing, while also supporting technology transfer and skills development.

Additionally, FuturePharma will contribute to local API and medicine production, reducing reliance on imports and strengthening supply security. It is also expected to enhance South Africa's preparedness for future pandemics and health emergencies by reinforcing local pharmaceutical capabilities.

The event will gather members of the Executive, senior government representatives, and stakeholders from the science and innovation community and industry.
