Private Investment Fuels Durban’s Golden Mile Redevelopment

Durban:More than R70 million in private investment has been secured for the redevelopment of 137 Lower Marine Parade on Durban's Golden Mile. The total investment is expected to reach nearly R100 million upon completion of tenant fit-outs.

According to South African Government News Agency, the eThekwini Municipality announced that Imvusa (Pty) Ltd, the preferred bidder, has obtained funding for the project. This redevelopment is set to expand the commercial space at the site from 1,700 square meters to 4,000 square meters.

Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2027 after completing statutory planning processes and the signing of leases. The municipality confirmed leases with multiple food and hospitality brands, including Steers, Fishaways, Debonairs Pizza, Wimpy, Milky Lane, Nonna's Riviera, and Perere by Gushima.

Nonna's Riviera will be making its debut in Durban as part of this development, marking its first expansion outside of Johannesburg. The redevelopment is expected to double the permanent jobs at the site from 85 to approximately 170, with Nonna's Riviera contributing 33 positions. Additionally, 80 jobs will be generated during the construction phase.

The project is progressing amidst ongoing growth along the beachfront promenade, which saw 17.45 million pedestrian movements in 2025, a 20% increase from the previous year. From January to September 2026, there were an additional 11.25 million pedestrian movements recorded.

Legal proceedings related to vacant possession have delayed the start of construction from June 2026. Remaining occupants are required to vacate by 15 January 2027, with the site handover occurring immediately thereafter. The development is anticipated to commence trading during the 2027/28 festive season.
