The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the reasons for delay in the disbursement of funds for drought relief promised by neighbour South Africa in 2013 are mutual and cannot be attributed to one government only.
Deputy Director of Information and Research in the foreign affairs ministry, Marbeline Mwashekele, made the clarification in a media statement on Tuesday after a local English daily newspaper reported that the Namibian government is yet to receive the N.dollars 100 million.
Mwashekele explained that officials continue to finalise the process upon which the disbursement is hinged adding, these essential bureaucratic processes on both sides are the reason for the delay.
During a state visit to Namibia from November 6 to 7 2013, South African President Jacob Zuma committed the funding to support the drought relief programme in Namibia, as the country battled devastating drought conditions at that time.
Mwashekele said a memorandum of understanding on how the funds are to be spent has been in the possession of the Namibian government since midJanuary 2015 and is undergoing due legal processes after scrutiny from all Namibian stakeholders.
