Residents invited to info session on proposed Table View Beachfront upgrade

The City of Cape Town is busy finalising the detailed design of the Table View Beachfront Refurbishment and Upgrade project. Residents in Blaauwberg and the surrounding areas are invited to attend an information session about the proposed project on Saturday, 2 April 2022 where the City’s Coastal Management specialists will be available to share all relevant information.

The information session will take place between 10:00 and 14:00 at the Milnerton Library on Pienaar Road, Milnerton.

Plans for the restoration of the Table View beachfront are under way. The project includes a new coastal walkway and various infrastructure upgrades along the beachfront. The proposed new walkway will be approximately four metres wide and will stretch along the beachfront between White Waters Road and Marine Circle from where it will integrate with the existing walkway to Dolphin Beach.

‘I encourage all residents and interested parties to make use of this opportunity and to go out there on Saturday to engage with officials around the proposed Table View Beachfront Refurbishment and Upgrade project and what it entails. From what I have seen, this restoration project intends to deliver a high quality recreational space along one of Cape Town’s most iconic stretches of coastline.

‘I am excited that the dune rehabilitation work is one of the key priorities of this project as it will provide a soft interface between the beach and infrastructure in Blaauwberg, in order to reduce the impact of wind-blown sand on adjacent infrastructure, an issue the community has had to deal with on an annual basis,’ said the City of Cape Town’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.

The department noted that there is a great need for a continuous walkway along the coast in the Table View and Blouberg area.

Many residents and visitors who walk along the beachfront have to navigate their way through the current parking spaces and on narrow verges. This does not promote pedestrian road safety, nor does it provide a consistent use of the coastline as is the case along many other beaches in Cape Town.

The City, therefore, decided to add the walkway to the project. A traffic study was undertaken in 2021 to assess where best to locate the proposed new walkway. It was proposed that the existing parking areas along the beachfront be reconfigured so that the new walkway can be constructed along the beachfront.

Furthermore, the restoration work will include rehabilitation of the dunes, repairs to broken pavement edges and damaged boardwalks and railings; new ablution facilities and pedestrian access points, as well as recreational facilities.
