Road to heritage sites reopened

The access road that links Freedom Park and the Voortrekker Monument has been reopened.

“This is excellent news for visitors who wish to visit both sites without having to exit the one site and enter the other by using the cumbersome outer roads,” said a statement which was issued by the heritage sites.

The sites said the reopening of the road is also a reaffirmation of the reconciliation initiatives that the two institutions have been implementing since 2006.

The two institutions represent different facets of South Africa’s collective history and heritage.

Construction of the road was completed in June 2011 and the gate was officially opened by President Zuma on 16 December 2011.
