The City of Cape Town’s Road Infrastructure Management Department is currently busy with a holding action on approximately 2kms of Ottery Road between Rosmead Avenue and Crescent Road in Royal Cape Park.

The works commenced on 7 March 2022 and are scheduled to be completed by the end of April 2022, pending unforeseen delays and inclement weather.

Construction will be done on weekdays between 09:00 and 15:30.

Ottery Road is part of the Bus Rapid Transport route scheduled to be upgraded in 2026. This project serves as a surfacing holding action for this section of Ottery Road, meaning, the City is doing maintenance to ensure the road remains in reasonable condition until such time as the major upgrade is due.

The works include the following:

• Reinstating surface water drainage structures (channels) in isolated areas of Ottery Road

• Replacing severely cracked asphalt within selected sections of lane on Ottery Road

• Repairing isolated local pavement subsidence

• Resurfacing Shawcamp Road between Ottery Road and Enslin Road.

No road closures will be implemented. Ottery Road is a very busy road with two lanes per carriageway and traffic will be accommodated by having one lane open, while construction is under way on the other.

‘We are not about to slow down on our mission to ensure that Cape Town’s road network is well maintained and durable. While we understand that this is a very busy road, it is necessary for us to continue with these works to give the road users a safer driving experience.

‘We cannot do a complete overhaul of the road, however, the work will hold until 2026 when the road is turned into an IRT road. I urge residents and motorists to please be patient with us while the construction is under way. We are trying to minimise inconvenience as far as possible and the work is scheduled to start after the morning peak and end before the evening peak,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

‘I also want to appeal to the motorists and road users to adhere to the signage displayed around the construction area and where possible, to consider using alternative routes to avoid unnecessary delays. We thank you in advance for your cooperation and support. Once done, all will benefit from a safer and durable road,’ said Councillor Quintas.
