Robbery suspect dies during shootout

DURBAN – Yesterday, police officers from the K9 Unit at Shongweni and Durban were welcomed by a hail of bullets by a gunman who was hiding in a tunnel at the Dassenhoek Railway Station. Two police officers were shot and injured when gunshots were fired at them.
It is alleged that yesterday afternoon, an armed man accosted three men and robbed them of their cellphones and a wristwatch. One of the victims who resisted was shot before the gunman ran into the tunnel where he hid. Police were alerted and as they approached the suspect, he opened fire at them. The suspect was fatally wounded and two police officers were injured during the shootout. The stolen items as well as the suspect’s firearm were recovered at the scene. The injured police officers were taken to hospital for medical attention. KwaNdengezi police are investigating charges of attempted murder, armed robbery and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula commended the police officers for protecting themselves when they came under fire. “Our police officers will not be threatened or deterred by criminals whilst executing their constitutional mandate and they will protect themselves when their lives are threatened,” he said.
