Robbery suspect nabbed as they flee scene

DURBAN Swift response by police officers from the Rapid Rail Police Unit resulted in the arrest of a 29- year-old suspect and the recovery of cellphones. Today at 09:00, an unknown man pretended to be a patron at a business premises along Malandela Road in KwaMashu. Abruptly, four armed men joined him and threatened the employees with firearms. They demanded cash and cellphones. A number of cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken at gunpoint.

Whilst the suspects were fleeing, they shot and injured a security guard (47). He sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital for medical attention. Police responded speedily and the suspects opened fire at police while fleeing on foot. One suspect carrying a bag with cellphones was arrested by police. He was detained at the KwaMashu police station and will be charged for business robbery, attempted murder and possession of suspected stolen property. He will appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrates Court soon.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula commended the swift response by the Rapid Response Team.
