Robbery suspects arrested while cruising on M25

DURBAN – Four suspects aged between 25 and 30 are appearing today before the Verulam Magistrate’s Court yesterday for charges of robbery and possession of illegal firearms. The suspects were arrested by the Phoenix Trio Crime Prevention Unit while driving on the M25 Southbound near crossroad in Phoenix.

It is alleged that on 19 March 2021 at 22:00, the employees were performing their duties at a service station in Mount Moriah when they were confronted by four armed males. At gunpoint the suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash, airtime machine, packs of cigarettes and drove away in their getaway vehicle. A case of robbery was opened at Phoenix police station for investigation.

On 23 March 2021 at 16:00, the police were conducting crime prevention duties in Phoenix and surrounding areas when they received information about the suspects who were involved in a robbery driving along M25 and proceeded to the scene. They spotted the suspect’s vehicle, the suspects were searched and were found in possession of two illegal firearms and cellphones. The suspects were arrested and charged accordingly.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner for KwaZulu-Natal, Major General Thulani Gonya commended the team for their sterling arrests and for recovering of unlicensed firearms.
