Kigali (dpa) – Rwanda’s High Court Friday sentenced popular singer and composer Kizito Mihigo to ten years in prison for plotting to kill President Paul Kagame and inciting hatred against the government.
Kizito, 33, admitted during his trial that he had been in contact with South Africa-based opposition group Rwanda National Congress and discussed a peaceful regime change.
He pleaded for forgiveness during the trial, which led to a reduced sentence.
Meanwhile, Mihigo’s co-accused, radio journalist Cassien Ntamuhanga and former soldier Jean Paul Dukuzumuremyi, received 25- and 30-year jail sentences respectively.
President Kagame, who has been in power since 2000, has been internationally lauded for creating economic growth and stability in Rwanda, but civil society groups accuse him of human rights abuses.
