Johannesburg: South Africa has formally taken over the Chairpersonship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Standing Committee of Senior Officials, pledging to enhance regional programme implementation and advance the bloc's objectives.
According to South African Government News Agency, at the opening of the SADC Senior Officials Meeting in Durban, Ambassador Tebogo Seokolo, Chairperson of the Standing Committee, expressed South Africa's commitment to advancing the aspirations of the regional organisation. He remarked on the honor of accepting the Chairpersonship for the term from August 2026 to August 2027.
The meeting in KwaZulu-Natal is a precursor to the SADC Council of Ministers gathering scheduled for August 12, followed by the 46th SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government from August 16 to 17. Seokolo noted that South Africa's formal assumption of the Chairship follows its interim role after unforeseen circumstances impacted Madagascar.
The transition, Seokolo stated, showcases the resilience of SADC institutions and the dedication of member states to maintain continuity. He expressed gratitude to Zimbabwe for its leadership during the transitional period, highlighting the country's role in hosting statutory meetings.
Seokolo also acknowledged Zambia's leadership as part of the Summit Troika and emphasized South Africa's readiness to collaborate with all member states in advancing the regional agenda. He underscored the critical role of the Standing Committee in ensuring that the Council of Ministers receives strategic and implementable recommendations.
He outlined pressing issues on the agenda, including financial sustainability, peace and security challenges, economic transformation, infrastructure development, food and nutrition security, energy security, climate resilience, and public health. He expressed condolences for the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and reiterated the focus on industrialisation as central to SADC's economic development efforts.
Seokolo emphasized that South Africa's tenure will prioritize strengthening implementation, improving coordination among member states, and translating SADC decisions into measurable developmental outcomes. The Senior Officials Meeting will review reports on previous Summit and Council decisions, monitoring and evaluation systems, resource mobilisation, sustainable financing, and institutional reforms.
The meeting was held in Durban, a city noted for its historical role in Africa's liberation and integration efforts, including the establishment of the African Union in 2002. The SADC Standing Committee of Senior Officials provides technical support to the Council of Ministers.
