SA Fashion Week 2015 Glamourous Collections [analysis]

The 2015 South Africa Fashion Week SpringSummer was launched recently at the upmarket Crowne Plaza in Rosebank. The bi-annual, four-day fashion event saw more than 20 of South Africa’s top designers showcase their “luxury, ready-to-wear” collections.

It had works by Black Coffee, Amanda Cherry, Clive Rundle, Lalesso, Urban Zulu, Fundudzi, Keys Fashion, Sober, Sun Goddess, Erre, Olowsdotter, Wake, Adam and Eve and AfrikanSwiss.

Black seemed to be the colour of choice this season. Walt Disney also collaborated with SA Fashion Week to bring the Marvel-inspired show. It impressed tremendously by showcasing avant-garde, contemporary elements fused with distinct blends of African themes and of course, daring twists on ready-to-wear fashions inspired by the comic movie Avengers: Age of Ultron. The movie, shot in Johannesburg is set to be released in April in cinemas worldwide.

The six designers who worked on the Marvel Fashion-Hero Search were inspired by the comic heroes (Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow and The Incredible Hulk) leading to unique creations. The creatives included Rumbie by Rumbie’s, Rumbidzai Muzofa, Amos Tranque, Ralfe’s Siyabonga Ntini, Kamanga Wear’s Christina Kabamba and Donna M’shanga, Roman Handt and M4S’s Luiz Delaja.

South African and Kenyan designer duo, Lalesso stole the show with their opulent prints from their springsummer collection, reminiscent of a relaxing summer holiday. The collection managed to be both classic and unique.

Speaking about the revitalised line-up, SAFW director, Lucilla Booyzen said, “We want to provide the international fashion community with a glimpse into the unique and innovative nature of African design and creativity.”

“At SA Fashion Week, our primary focus is to foster the creative independence of talented new artists emerging from not only the Southern Africa region but on a continental front as well, and in turn providing retail opportunities for the designers within a global consumer-base,” Booyzen further added.

Since its inception in 1997, the SA Fashion Week has consistently grown in reputation and credibility – generating local proteacuteeacutes amongst participating designers.
