SA united against racism

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu says the #FillupMosesMabhidaStadium campaign will mobilise South Africans to be part of national Human Rights Day.

The event will be held in Durban to mark Human Rights Month, which is celebrated annually in South Africa throughout March. The month serves as a reminder to all South Africans about the sacrifices made in the struggle for liberation and the achievement of democracy in 1994.

This year’s commemoration coincides with the 20th anniversary of the signing of the final draft of the Constitution into law and the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Women’s March to the Union Buildings.

This year’s celebrations take place under the theme ‘South Africa United against Racism’. President Jacob Zuma will address the national Human Rights Day commemoration on 21 March at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

During the State of the Nation Address in February, President Zuma declared that Human Rights Day 2016 be commemorated as the national day against racism and as a foundation to start a long-term programme on building a non-racial society.

The President urged all South Africans to confront racism, saying South Africans should devote their time to anti-racism campaigns.

Premier Mchunu thanked national government for choosing KwaZulu-Natal to host national Human Rights Day. He said he is confident that the stadium will be packed to the rafters with the people of the province across all racial lines, displaying unity against any form of racism and intolerance.

“Human Rights Day 2016 coincides with the 20th anniversary of our Constitution. We will use the day to salute the heroism and the sacrifices of our people, who made it possible for all of us to live in a strong and vibrant democracy.

“On this important day, I call upon the people of this province to hold aloft the banner of freedom that we so fondly cherish. We must remember our former President Nelson Mandela, who fought so hard for all of us, inspired by the vision of a united, democratic, non-sexist, non-racial and prosperous society,” said Premier Mchunu.

Government will host various activities throughout the month to get South Africans to continue working together to further consolidate democracy and celebrate the achievements of 20 years of the Constitution.
