Skukuza: The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is convening a significant retreat at the Kruger National Park, where Ministers of Foreign Affairs are expected to formulate a collective response to mounting global geopolitical pressures that are impacting citizens across the region.

According to South African Government News Agency, Barbara Lopi, SADC Secretariat Head of Communications and Public Relations, emphasized the importance of this gathering as member states confront issues such as rising food and fuel prices and energy-related challenges. This retreat aims to provide strategic guidance on how SADC can collectively address these pressing concerns.

Lopi stated that the retreat seeks to resolve the impacts of these challenges on the citizens and anticipates direction from the ministers on the region's response to geopolitical situations. While acknowledging the difficulties posed by global instability, Lopi noted that these circumstances also present opportunities for SADC to enhance cooperation and make better use of its natural resources.

She highlighted the region's wealth in critical minerals and strategic commodities as a basis for deeper regional collaboration and industrial development. The retreat is expected to yield practical commitments from member states to strengthen cooperation in response to global shocks.

Migration featured prominently in the discussions, with Lopi noting South Africa's position on the matter aligns with existing regional frameworks. The retreat continues in Skukuza, focusing on refining coordinated responses to geopolitical challenges affecting food security, energy systems, trade, and regional mobility.
