Pretoria: The deteriorating security situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the restoration of constitutional order in Madagascar, and the fight against terrorism in Mozambique were key topics of discussion at the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ Troika meeting on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation held in Durban on Sunday.

According to South African Government News Agency, Malawi's Second Vice President, Right Honourable Enoch Kamzingeni Chihana, representing President Arthur Peter Mutharika, highlighted the critical importance of the eastern DRC situation to regional stability. Chihana emphasized that peace in the region is achievable with collective efforts from regional and international bodies, including the Eastern African Community, the African Union, the Washington Accords, and the Doha peace framework. He also noted the compounded security crisis due to the Ebola outbreak, which has claimed over 2,000 lives, and commended Angola, South Africa, and Zimbabwe for their financial support in combating the outbreak.

On Madagascar, Chihana reiterated SADC's commitment to restoring constitutional order. He praised the efforts of the SADC Shadow Diplomacy Mission, led by former Malawi President Dr. Joyce Banda, and the Panel of Elders, urging for continued consultations to address the country's political future. He also stressed the need for a timely establishment of the SADC liaison office in Madagascar.

Regarding Mozambique, Chihana welcomed the ongoing dialogue between the government and opposition to address post-election political challenges and violence. He acknowledged the military operations against terrorist groups in Cabo Delgado Province and emphasized the importance of eliminating terrorism from the region. Chihana also called for strengthened democracy through enhanced election observation mechanisms and adequate resource provision.

The Malawi Vice President highlighted regional solidarity as SADC's strength, urging member states to approach discussions with openness and mutual respect. Chihana expressed appreciation for the participating ministers and South Africa's hosting arrangements. He declared the Extraordinary Summit of the SADC Organ Troika on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation officially open, affirming SADC's commitment to peace, security, democratic governance, and the collective well-being of member states.
