SAPS Assures Public of Adequate Security Measures for 2026 Local Elections

Pretoria:The South African Police Service (SAPS) has assured the public that comprehensive security measures are in place as South Africans participate in the 2026 Local Government Elections. National Police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, expressed confidence in the security arrangements, emphasizing their sufficiency to ensure free, fair, and safe elections.

According to South African Government News Agency, Mathe made these remarks during an interview with the Government Communications and Information Centre at the National Results Operation Centre. As the voting stations opened nationwide, Mathe highlighted the enhanced security, particularly at 321 high-risk voting locations identified due to potential instability from community protests or service delivery issues.

Mathe reported that no major incidents had occurred at these high-risk stations due to the increased security presence. Public order policing units and roving teams remain on standby, with operations coordinated by the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS), which oversees incidents across all provinces.

Mathe also addressed the challenge of misinformation, urging voters to verify information to avoid unnecessary panic. She reassured voters of a secure voting environment, citing NATJOINTS' strong track record in maintaining safety during elections.
