CAPE TOWN – The management of the SAPS in the Western Cape has today learnt with shock of the untimely death of the provincial secretary of POPCRU, Captain Mncedisi Mbolekwa. A gallant fighter for workers’ rights, who was not scared to speak truth to power.
Captain Mbolekwa, 51, had diligently served the SAPS in various capacities for 29 years. The latter part of which was his deployment as a full time POPCRU shop steward. An outspoken leader who was never shy to speak his mind on matters affecting the rights and welfare of workers. He played a crucial role with other POPCRU shop stewards within the Safety and Security Sectoral Bargaining Council (SSSBC), advancing the interests of workers. He was also part of the SAPS employment equity forum that ensured equitable representation of the workforce within the police service. To him, the SAPS as a law enforcement agency was set to thrive in its mandate if it took good care of its most important asset, the employees.
With a heavy heart, Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt General Yolisa Matakata lamented, “It is tragic that we lose a leader of his stature at a critical time in the country. With the COVID-19 pandemic threatening to destabilise workplaces, discerning voices such as his are needed even more. The safety of police officials was very close to his heart and without fail he advocated for heavy sentences to be meted out to those who attacked police members”.
He will be remembered for fighting injustice and championing workers’ rights all the time.
“On behalf of the SAPS management in the Province, we convey our deepest condolences to his wife, children and the rest of the family. May his soul rest in eternal peace”, said Lt General Matakata.
