Security guard nabbed at taxi rank

DURBAN � Tongaat police were alerted to a shooting incident at a taxi rank in the CBD. When they arrived at the scene, they found a security guard who guards the taxi rank with a gunshot wound to the leg.

It is alleged that he accidently shot himself with a rifle. He was taken to hospital for medical attention under police guard. He will be charged for discharging a firearm in public and negligent handling of a firearm. The rifle with 28 rounds of ammunition was seized for further investigation. The suspect will appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court soon.

Another operation that was conducted by police officers in the eThekwini Inner North Cluster in KwaMashu, Inanda, Ntuzuma and Newlands four suspects aged between 23 and 38 were arrested after they were found in possession of drugs.

Police recovered heroin powder and heroin capsules. They were taken to KwaMashu police station for detention. Three illegal liquor outlets were closed down and liquor subsequently confiscated with three owners charged for dealing in liquor without a license.

At Amaoti, police arrested two suspects for malicious damage to property and assault. Both suspects were taken to Inanda police station. ln Ntuzuma, an illegal liquor outlet was shut down and the owner was arrested. Two suspects found on the premises were arrested for possession of mandrax.

In Newlands West, police arrested a 32-year-old suspect. It is alleged that the suspect was driving along Hilldale Drive when he drove into oncoming traffic and collided with another vehicle. The driver and passengers in the other vehicle sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for medical attention.

The suspect was taken into custody in Newlands East police station. He was charged for driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance, as well reckless and negligent driving. All arrested suspects will appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court.
