Seven suspects arrested for business robberies and a house robbery in Philippi East

Efforts were made by police to address the scourge of business and house robberies in Philippi East, which resulted in the arrest of seven suspects this week. This occurred during a joint operation between the Nyanga Cluster Trio Crimes Unit and Philippi East Detectives.

Four suspects were arrested after business robberies had been committed in three shops over the weekend at the Philippi Plaza. Extensive networking and investigations led to the arrests. During the robberies the suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and fifteen watches. Three of the watches were recovered. Two other known suspects are on the run and are linked to all three business robberies.

Three suspects were also arrested in Lower Crossroads after a house robbery and rape incident which occurred in Marcus Garvey. The three suspects robbed the victim of cell phones and two of the suspects allegedly raped one of the women on the premises. Two other suspects are on the run and there is a possibility that the trio might be linked to other house robberies committed in the area of Philippi East.

Police members were applauded for their successful actions and their diligence in ensuring that those who continue to terrorise community members and businesses are brought to book. The suspects will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court, once charged with business and house robbery.
