Several suspects due in court for house robbery, arson and murder charges committed in Nyanga

WESTERN CAPE – Strides to deal with serious crimes in Nyanga continue to yield more positive results.

Three suspects aged between 27 and 30 are appearing in Athlone Magistrate’s Court today facing charges of house robbery and arson. Two suspects aged 27 and 30 were arrested on Sunday night after they committed a house robbery in Ndibela Crescent in Browns Farm. It is alleged the complainant was awaken by five suspects, some positively armed who robbed them of two cellular telephones, two lap tops, a DVD, a television set , children’s clothes and cash. The suspects then fled the scene on foot. Through networking the police arrested the suspects.

The 29-year-old was arrested early on Monday morning after he allegedly set alight his family’s house in Hlungulu Street, Browns Farm. The suspect had demanded money from his siblings to buy drugs and when he could not get the money he threatened to burn the house. Smoke was seen coming out from the house and the suspect was arrested.

In an unrelated case, three suspects aged 21, 26 and 28 were also arrested in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, 07 August 2019) at about 02:00 in Gugulethu. The suspects had allegedly robbed a house on Tuesday morning in Siyahlala, Browns Farm. The complainant was with two friends when she heard a knock at about 09:30 and two unknown suspects entered the residence and pointed them with a firearm. The suspects then demanded cell phones and also took a television set and a blanket and fled in a white Toyota Avanza. Preliminary investigation led police to the address of the owner of the vehicle and further investigations resulted in the arrest of the trio. Several number plates were found at the suspect’s residence and two licensed firearms confiscated for further investigation.

A 23-year-old woman was also arrested today for a case of murder. It is alleged that early today at about 01:00 the neighbour heard the deceased crying for help and when he went to check, he found the deceased in bed covered with blood. When the neighbour asked what had happened the deceased said the suspect stabbed her. The 35 p-year-old man later died in hospital.

The four suspects aged 21, 23, 26 and 28 are due to appear in Athlone Magistrate’s Court once charged to face house robbery and murder charges.
