Siblings in court for firearm possession

DURBAN – Siblings are appearing today in the Mtunzini Magistrates Court for illegal possession of firearm and ammunition. The suspects were arrested by Sundumbili police with Ilembe Task Team who were working on the murder case that occurred in August 2019.

Police arrested a 26-year-old suspect after he was found with a homemade firearm with ammunition and cellphones in his home in Mankwanyaneni area. The suspect has been linked to a case of murder and business robbery that occurred at Dendethu reserve. Further investigation led police to Ngudwini Reserve where a 26-year-old female suspect was found with a pistol which had its serial number filed off and ammunition. She was then arrested for illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.

It is alleged that on 31 August 2019, a group of armed males entered business premises in Dendethu Reserve where they robbed the owner of cash, killed the owner’s wife, Ngoneni Shabalala (59), robbed the patrons of their valuables and fled with the owner’s two vehicles. The vehicles were later found abandoned. A case of murder and business robbery was opened at Sundumbili police station for investigation. The firearm will be subjected for ballistic testing to determine if it was used in the commission of crime.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula applauded the police officers on the vigilance which led to the arrest.
