Jakarta: South Africa and Indonesia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral economic relations, with a focus on enhancing trade to foster mutual economic growth. This statement was made by President Cyril Ramaphosa during a joint press briefing with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, following bilateral talks held during Ramaphosa’s State Visit to Indonesia.
According to South African Government News Agency, Indonesia stands as South Africa’s third largest trading partner in Southeast Asia, with South African exports to Indonesia valued at R10.5 billion and Indonesian imports at R16.9 billion. President Ramaphosa emphasized the significance of expanding bilateral relations through existing mechanisms and noted the necessity of increasing trade as a means to achieve inclusive economic growth. He highlighted the importance of building resilient and diversified economies to benefit both nations as they navigate similar geopolitical challenges.
During the visit, President Ramaphosa was accompanied by key South African officials: the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Angie Motshekga; Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau; Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen, and Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Alvin Botes. A South African business delegation also participated in the South Africa-Indonesia Business Forum in Jakarta, aiming to develop new commercial partnerships between the two countries.

Views were exchanged on efforts to end the conflict in Gaza and to achieve a lasting peace that fulfills the Palestinian people’s aspirations for self-determination.
President Ramaphosa also noted South Africa’s anticipation of hosting President Subianto at the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg in November. The G20 Presidency offers an opportunity to focus on fostering inclusive growth, reducing inequality, and promoting sustainable development, particularly in the Global South and Africa.
