South Africa: Boy Drowns, Sister Missing After Crossing Flooded River

By Jenna Etheridge, News24

A five-year-old boy drowned after he and his family tried to cross a flooded river in Klaarstroom at the weekend, Southern Cape police said on Monday.

The boy, his nine-year-old sister and their father were trying to make the crossing on Friday afternoon when they were swept downstream, Captain Malcolm Pojie said.

The father managed to get out. The boy’s body was recovered shortly after.

Divers had yet to find his sister.

“We searched for about 12km this morning and can’t find any trace of the girl,” Pojie said.
