Henricho Bruintjies blitzed to his best 100-metre time at Sunday’s Internazionale diAtletica Leggera meeting in Italy.

The Cape Town athlete won his event in a time of 9.89 seconds… and that would be a new South African record but a gust of wind down the main straight was measured at 4.4 metres per second, more than double the permitted 2m/sec.

He told the official meeting website: ‘I felt very good in my last month of training.. the track is good and the people very friendly here so yes, I’d love to come back here next year.’

There was also success from fellow sprinter Alyssa Conley, the Johannesburg sprinter continuing on her comeback after a bad run of injury with an 11.23sec clocking.

Conley (vest No120) is pictured here at Sunday’s meeting, with winner Asher-Smith on the far right.

That was good for second spot behind Britain’s Diana Asher-Smith (11.22) but Conley will no doubt be happy with another season’s best clocking as she eyes the African Championships next month.

‘It was cold, windy and wet but still a very well organised meeting,’ Conley told Road to Rio 2016. ‘I warmed up with a 11.36 in the heat and wanted to qualify and get a PB in the finals as well.

‘I wanted the victory but I need to work on my start.’

In field events long jumpers Dylan Cotter and Lynique Prinsloo flew the SA flag.

Cotter won his event with a leap of 7.83 metres while Prinsloo’s 6.31m was good for second behind local athlete Tania Vicenzino’s 6.40m.
