Pretoria: The government has extended its appreciation and well wishes to all workers as South Africa observes International Workers’ Day on 1 May 2025, a day known as May Day, which is marked by a public holiday in the nation. Acting Director-General of the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), Terry Vandayar, emphasized the significance of the day, encouraging citizens to reflect on the sacrifices and victories of workers and trade unions in their fight for fair employment standards and solidarity.
According to South African Government News Agency, Vandayar highlighted the government’s commitment to safeguarding workers’ rights through progressive legislation such as the Labour Relations Act, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, the Employment Equity Act, and the Skills Development Act. He called upon all citizens to honor South Africa’s workers, particularly the frontline heroes who continue to serve with dedication even on public holidays, acknowledging their vital contributions to society.
In parallel, the Department of Correctional Services National Commissioner, Makgothi Thobakgale, reiterated the department’s solidarity with workers. He underscored the importance of collaboration with workers’ representatives and trade unions to ensure that workers’ rights are upheld and that their wellness and health are prioritized. Thobakgale emphasized the department’s joint mandate with workers’ representatives to improve working conditions and benefits, extending well wishes to all workers on this significant day.
