Johannesburg: In a year marking significant anniversaries in South Africa's democratic journey, the government is actively engaging communities to celebrate 32 years of democracy. This initiative commemorates 30 years since the adoption of the Constitution, 50 years since the 1976 Youth Uprising, 70 years since the 1956 Women's March, and 60 years since the forced removals in District Six.
According to South African Government News Agency, Deputy Minister in the Presidency responsible for the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), Kenny Morolong, announced the provincial launch of the Milestones of Freedom campaign at the uMfolozi TVET College in KwaZulu-Natal. The campaign, initially launched by President Cyril Ramaphosa in June, aims to promote social cohesion, national pride, and reflection on South Africa's democratic achievements under the theme: 'Honouring the Past. Delivering the Future.'
The Deputy Minister highlighted numerous achievements since the country's democratic transition in 1994. The 30-Year Review Report of South Africa's Democracy (1994-2024) and findings from Census 2022 underscore the progress made in uplifting the nation. Morolong emphasized the Constitution's role as a cornerstone of democracy, enshrining equality, human dignity, and freedom from discrimination.
South Africa's Constitution has garnered international respect for its commitment to human rights and judicial independence. Former Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, commended it as a modern governance charter protecting fundamental human rights.
The constitutional order's defining feature is the separation of powers among the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary, promoting accountability and the rule of law. Chapter 9 institutions further bolster this framework by protecting democracy, promoting good governance, and ensuring public accountability.
Morolong noted the democratic gains that have improved citizens' quality of life through enhanced access to education, healthcare, housing, clean water, electricity, and social protection. The 2025 General Household Survey indicates significant improvements in sanitation and electricity access, as well as increased social protection coverage.
The event also paid tribute to Chief Albert Luthuli, a renowned anti-apartheid activist, with his family in attendance. Veli Luthuli, his daughter-in-law, highlighted his legacy of selflessness and community service.
The day's proceedings included a wreath-laying ceremony at the Groutville United Congregational Church of Southern Africa, honoring Chief Luthuli. The Milestones of Freedom Campaign, initially launched at the Union Buildings on 18 June 2026, is now being extended to the John Taolo Gaetsewe District in the Northern Cape.
