Skukuza: International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola reiterated the South African government's stance against attacks on foreign nationals, asserting such actions are unlawful and intolerable. Speaking at the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Foreign Ministers' Retreat in Kruger National Park, Lamola highlighted migration as a key issue under discussion.

According to South African Government News Agency, Lamola noted that several regional counterparts expressed concerns over the safety of their citizens in South Africa. These concerns arose after recent demonstrations linked to illegal migration and frustrations regarding undocumented foreign nationals. Lamola emphasized South Africa's commitment to condemning such attacks, stating that only law enforcement is authorized to handle these matters.

Lamola acknowledged the challenges South Africa faces concerning irregular migration and stressed the need for government agencies to have the capability to manage immigration laws effectively. He underscored the importance of being able to track individuals in the country and ensure that anyone, regardless of nationality, who commits a crime is apprehended.

The retreat at Skukuza aims to address migration as part of broader discussions on regional integration and economic cooperation within SADC. Lamola pointed out that successful integration relies on member states' cooperation, stable borders, and adherence to the rule of law. Additionally, he recognized the historical support African countries provided during South Africa's liberation struggle and emphasized the importance of maintaining order and law enforcement.

The SADC retreat will also focus on strategic priorities like infrastructure development, industrialization, trade, energy security, food systems, transport, logistics, debt management, and the free movement of people, goods, and services across the region.
