SOUTH AFRICA CONDEMNS SYRIA BOMB BLASTS

The South African government has condemned the terrorist bombings in Syria, which have killed more than 70 people, says the Department of International Relations and Co0operation.

This follows a series of terrorist bombings which rocked the coastal cities of Tartous and Jableh on Monday.

“The South African government joins the world community in condemning these dastardly acts of terror and calls on all peace-loving mankind to do everything to defeat terrorism and extremism,” said department spokesman Clayson Monyela.

According to the department, by Tuesday morning the death toll stood at 78, with most of the victims being women and children. Scores of people were killed at the main entrance of the bus station in Jableh city, near the city’s electricity directorate.

“The terrorist group then dispatched a suicide bomber to follow the injured into the emergency ward at Jableh National Hospital where he blew himself up, killing some of those injured earlier, as well as hospital staff,” Monyela said.

The department said it was not surprised that terrorist groups like the so-called Islamic State (Daesh) and Japhat Al Nusra Front were isolated and excluded from the ceasefire and the current peace process.

“We call on the United Nations envoy, Dr Staffan De Mistura, and the parties negotiating in Geneva to throw their weight behind the peace process,” said the department, adding that Syrians deserved a peaceful future.
