Pretoria: The South African government has expressed significant concern over the United States' military action against Venezuela over the weekend. The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation announced that the United States had carried out a substantial military strike against Venezuela, resulting in the capture of President Nicholas Maduro and his wife, who have been transported out of the country.
According to South African Government News Agency, the Ministry released a statement on Saturday emphasizing South Africa's stance on the issue. The statement highlighted the view that the United States' actions represent a clear breach of the United Nations Charter, which obligates all Member States to abstain from using force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.
The Ministry further elaborated that the UN Charter does not permit external military intervention in the domestic affairs of a sovereign nation. It pointed out that historical precedents have shown that military invasions in sovereign nations often lead to instability and an intensification of crises.
The statement also noted that such unlawful and unilateral force undermines the stability of the international order and the principle of equality among nations. South Africa has called on the United Nations Security Council, the entity responsible for maintaining international peace and security, to urgently convene and address the situation.
